NB: In March 2010, the Government did not approve funding for the East Route.
An East Route, shown in the map to the right, would have connected Leeds city centre to St. James’s Hospital via Beckett Street and Burmantofts Street, enhancing public transport links to this major teaching hospital.
You can also view a larger aerial view (1280k) of the route.
Our Preferred Option was for an NGT-only link road mainly running parallel to Beckett Street before rejoining the highway at Burmantofts Street.
Key issues:
- No congestion on new NGT-only link – so more reliable journeys;
- NGT stop located directly in front of St James’s Hospital adjacent to Shakespeare Street;
- Some loss of biodiversity and trees but opportunities to enhance the green space in front of St James’s Hospital and along Beckett Street;
- Preferred alignment minimises impact on existing housing and trees.
These images show the area outside St James Hospital as it looks now (on the left), and as it could look.
