Summer 2009 public consultation findings

A summary of the results from our recent public consultation on the New Generation Transport proposals.

21 October 2009The NGT Exhibition trailer at St Chads Parish Centre on Otley Road

In June and July we held a number of public exhibitions along the proposed routes and in the city centre, to give people more information about the NGT proposals.

We asked people to give us their views by filling in a questionnaire, at the exhibitions or on-line, between June and September.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill in a questionnaire.

Results summary

Over 2,500 people completed the questionnaire and a full analysis of the responses has now been undertaken. The key findings can be summarised as follows:

  • 77% of respondents support the NGT proposals;
  • 76% of respondents support the proposed use of Trolleybuses;
  • Almost three-quarters of those who filled in a questionnaire support the idea for a park and ride site at the end of the North and South routes;
  • The most important things that people want to see in a new public transport system are: more reliable services, cheaper fares and faster services; and
  • Almost two-thirds of respondents want more environmentally friendly vehicles.

What happens now?

Metro and Leeds City Council are currently in the process of submitting a funding bid to the Central Government and we hope to find out if we have obtained the first stage of Government approval by the end of the year. If successful we will then seek the legal powers to build the scheme.
